Laboratory handling

Hexarelin is a synthetic growth-hormone-releasing hexapeptide that activates the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHS-R1a) as well as the scavenger receptor CD36, which is expressed on cardiomyocytes and microvascular endothelium. In rodent studies, researchers examined hexarelin's association with pituitary growth-hormone release and, separately, with cardiac function markers after experimental ischemia-reperfusion injury and induced myocardial infarction in rats, reporting improved measures of cardiac systolic function and reduced markers of tissue damage in these animal models. Investigators linked the cardiac findings in part to modulation of interleukin-1 signaling downstream of GHS-R1a activation, and separately to CD36-mediated pathways independent of growth-hormone release. Hexarelin has not completed human clinical trials and holds no regulatory approval for any use.
